Passive Income 2021

The internet has created so many incredible new passive income opportunities, and many of them still present a lot of opporunity in 2022! .

Some ways to make passive income include via a monetized blog, chatbots, flipping domain names, affiliate marketing, copywriting, data entry, a YouTube channel, eCommerce, dropshipping, print on demand, gaming, podcasting, or 3D Printing.

At the end of this article you will have 21 passive income ideas you could consider to make passive income. We have full guides on our site and YouTube channel so feel free to subscribe to our channel for more ideas and tutorials. Also, click on the images and links below to learn more about each idea on our website.

1. Blogging

You have probably heard that blogging can generate excellent monthly passive income, and it’s still true today. But what people do not know is exactly how to do it. Some internet marketers talk about the importance of using expensive keyword tools, others talk about link building, and some are still teaching strange outdated methods that no longer work today.

Never heard of it? That’s probably because the course founders don’t run cheesy YouTube ads, if you know what I mean. Project 24 is an online course that teaches how to make a full time passive income in 24 months. I actually talked to one of their employees in the video above, check it out to learn more. You can also learn more about Project 24 and making money blogging in the link below.

2. Chatbots

This may come as a surprise to many, but Chatbots can also be a way to make passive income, but you have to know how to monetize them. Creating a chatbot is actually easy, even for non-developers – and I don’t say that lightly – I am not a developer myself, but I have created successful chatbots.

However, creating a profitable chatbot does take time and effort. Some ways you can monetize a chatbot include affiliate marketing, lead generation, advertising or just by selling it. I talk about all of these chatbot money making ideas and more in the video above, check it out. I also demonstrate how to create a chatbot with no coding knowledge needed in that video. If you would prefer a written article, check out the link below.

3. Flipping Domain Names

This passive income stream entails buying domain names you think someone will want some day, and then selling them for a premium once you get a buyer. You can register most .com domains for about $10US/ year, and then possibly resell it for thousands of dollars.

However, your success depends in part on the domain names you choose, niche, trends and buyer interest. I have a full tutorial video above that talks about this idea in detail, from choosing a domain to buying and selling it. Check it out to learn more, or head over to the article below.

4. Flipping Items on Craigslist/Kijiji

Flipping items on a peer-to-peer platform like Craigslist, Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace or other classified sites is a great way to make some money quick. You do need to have things that people actually want to buy for sale, and this isn’t passive, it’s more of a side hustle, but it’s a lot of fun. I actually made over $2,000 doing exactly that over 11 months and documented it in the video below.

I talk about what I sold online, from Pokemon cards to DVDs, electronics, kitchen items, jewelry and sports goods. Definitely check it out if this idea interests you and you want some ideas of used items you may have around your home that you can sell online. This video can also give you an idea of their value. If you are wondering how much your Pokemon cards are worth, I have a full YouTube playlist that shows much they are selling for right now.

5. eCommerce

eCommerce is my personal specialty. I have been selling online for well over 10 years now and it’s my favourite way to make passive income. You can make passive income from an online store if it is built to generate passive and not active income.

If your income is passive, your eCommerce should not require your active attention, whereas most online stores are built to require the owner’s constant, and active participation, for example dealing with inventory, packing and shipping the product. eCommerce can be made very lucrative and passive in a variety of ways, from dropshipping, to print on demand, to selling digital goods. Check out our guide below for more eCommerce info.

6. Dropshipping

Let’s talk more about dropshipping. This passive income idea falls under eCommerce, but consists in selling products you do not physically stock. What happens is once someone places an order on your site, the dropshipping company you chose then fulfills the orders and ship the products to the customer for you. It’s a cool business model because you do not have to manage any physical inventory.

However, there is a lot of buzz around dropshipping which is often promoted as a way to “get rich quick.” That is very very far from being the case. Setting up a successful dropshipping business takes time, effort, requires a lot of work and research, and truely does entail a lot of costs.

The bulk of your work is to successfully promote the products, so having excellent digital marketing skills is also extremely important when dropshipping. I actually have a full free in-depth dropshipping course on our channel, check it out in the video above. If you prefer written content, check out the link to our article about dropshipping below.

7. Print-on-Demand

Print-on-Demand is another eCommerce business model I find fascinating. Print-on-Demand allows you to sell your designs on various types of merchandise from t-shirts, to hats, phone cases, hoodies, sweatshirts and more. And it’s actually super easy to setup with Printful!

Kind of like with dropshipping, when a customer orders an item featuring your design from your online store, the print on demand service prints the design, packages and ships the item to your buyer for you. So a lot of the heavy lifting is done for you! Your biggest job is creating designs people want to buy and promoting the products so they sell. I actually have a full print-on-demand course available here.

8. Gaming

Gaming is more and more popular, and some gamers who regularly share their tips and techniques on YouTube and Twitch are making a full time passive income. If gaming is a hobby you love, you may be interested in monetizing your gaming skills by sharing your knowledge with a community on those platforms.

I will be interviewing a successful gamer who is making passive income on this channel in the future. If the video is available it is listed above, if not subscribe and hit the bell notification to know when it comes out. They quit their day job to be a full-time gamer but, of course, it took time and effort to get there. We will be talking all about how they got there in their interview. You can also learn more in the article in the description below.

9. Copywriting

If you like writing essays or articles, then you may be interested in writing for other people’s blogs to make money. This is more of a side hustle of course, unless you build up your skills and a client base, and then outsource the work to make it more passive.

In order to build and retain your clients you will need to provide high quality content that provides them return on investment, may that be more traffic and/or more sales. And keep in mind, writing for the web is very different from writing a paper for school for example. We highly recommend Project 24 if you want to learn a surefire method to write quality blog posts you can sell to clients looking for copywriting services.

10. Data Entry

Feeding data into spreadsheets is pretty easy, but companies often do not have enough resources or time to have this done in-house. And so they often hire freelancers to do these jobs, usually with a per project or hourly rate.

This is a pretty cool online side hustle you can automate or outsource for passive profit. There is more on how to do this in the article in the description below.

11. YouTube Channel

YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google, and it belongs to Google! Millions of people watch YouTube videos every day for education and entertainment. If you meet the monetization requirements, community guidelines and other legal obligations, you can get your channel monetized and let advertisers display ads on your videos for passive income.

So instead of being paid to create videos for an hourly rate, you can create videos on a monetized channel you own and get paid by allowing ads to be shown on your videos. How much you make depends on a variety of factors including number of monetized views, target market, viewer location, the seasonality of your content, and industry. Project 24, that blogging course I talked about at the beginning of the this article, actually also contains an in-depth YouTube course. Definitely check it out in the description below.

12. Affiliate Marketing

What affiliate marketing entails is promoting products or services to your audience, and if they sign up and pay for the service, you will receive a commission on the sales from your efforts. That may be a percentage of the sale of a dollar amount for example.

Affiliate marketing is a great business model, but in order to succeed, you do need to have an audience that trusts you. And, in my opinion, you should only promote products you actually use and care about. You can learn more in the article in the description below.

13. Niche Membership Sites

Niche membership sites offer exclusive, usually paid, access to content. You can make excellent monthly passive income with enough monetized traffic and content people are willing to pay for on a recurring basis. This idea does require providing an audience ongoing value to retain them as paid subscribers. To learn more about creating content people will pay for in a membership site, check out the link in the description below.

14. Sell eBooks

Creating an eBook is much easier than you may think! If you have a Gmail account you can even use Google sheets to create your eBook for free. The harder part is building an audience and coming up with the content they will buy from you. eBooks can be tutorials, guides, novels, printable coloring books and more.

I love selling eBooks because it is fairly passive. If you create evergreen content, or content that will still be valid in a few years from now, you can passively sell your eBook online for many years to come. If this idea interests you, definitely check out the video above where I demonstrate how to create an eBook for free, from cover to cover. Check out this YouTube Playlist for more digital product ideas you can sell online.

15. 3D Printing

Although it is still a new concept to many, 3D printing is growing fast in popularity and provides a number of money making opportunities. You can make money 3D printing by selling 3D printed objects of course, but also by leasing your 3D printer, offering 3D printing training, selling models, or offering a print-on-demand service.

In the video above, we go into more detail about these 3D printing money making ideas. Check the links below to see more examples and ideas about how to make passive income 3D printing.

16. Selling Online Courses

Ongoing education is becoming more and more accessible thanks to the internet. You can offer courses on practically anything these days if you have expertise and experience on a certain topic. You could teach people how to work out, create an online business, crochet, or do anything else you can teach. If you create a course people are willing to buy, you can make monthly passive income from course sales.

Some formats you can sell courses in include video, eBooks or audio-files like podcasts. Most often, you will need an audience that trusts you in order to sell courses online and so building a brand on YouTube or via a blog can be great ways to build up your authoritativeness and audience. You can learn more about how to do exactly that in Project 24 since they also have an info-products course.

17. Podcasting

Starting a podcast is actually a lot easier than you might think. The harder part is generating downloads and monetizing them. That is where most people fail and abandon their podcasting dream. However, there are many ways to monetize podcasting content, from affiliate promotions to sponsorships and more.

You can learn more in our podcasting guide below, or even in Project 24 – there is also a podcasting course included in there too! Seriously, if you want to learn how to make Passive Income check out Project 24. Check the links in the description below to learn more.

18. Selling Stock Photos & Videos

Many individuals and businesses have websites today, and these online resources require pictures and videos for illustration purposes. Not only that but creators, businesses, advertisers and developers need stock photos for their projects too.

Those who cannot create this media themselves often get it from people selling stock photos and videos, just like we do for some content in our videos. If you have photos or videos that could legally qualify for you to sell as stock photography, you could consider selling them on different platforms. You can learn more in the article below.

19. Teaching Languages Online

There is always someone somewhere who wants to learn a new language for one reason or another. If you are proficient in a particular language, you can earn some money during your free time by teaching others to speak it, as a side hustle.

This is made possible via a variety of online platforms like VIPKid for example. You can make this idea more passive by delegating the work to other second language teachers and putting them in touch with clients you generated for a commission.

20. Video Editing

We live in a world where video content is more popular than it has ever been. Editing video content can truly be a chore for some people, like me sometimes, just because I feel like my added value is more in creating content than editing videos.

If editing videos is something you enjoy, then give it a try for others as a side hustle! You can outsource, delegate and automate parts of the job to increase your income to eventually transform this side hustle into a more passive income source of income.

21. Influencer Marketing

If you have an audience via a blog, a highly active social media account, or a YouTube channel, you can generate a passive income by monetizing your audience in a variety of ways. We actually talked about a few of them in this video, you could try affiliate marketing, memberships, selling digital goods and more. With a large enough and engaged enough audience, you can make quite a bit of money with influencer marketing. The YouTube video above contains 4 digital product ideas for influencers. Check out the article below for 8 passive income ideas for influencers.

8 Passive Income Ideas for Influencers

Making Passive Income

Thanks for sticking around until the end of this video! I would like to go into more detail about what passive income actually is because it’s often made out to seem like a bit of a myth.

Passive income is income that is revenue that is earned without trading time for money on an hourly or per project basis. It is a steady sustainable stream of revenue that is generated by monetized assets, and creating and optimizing those assets may take days, months, weeks, years – and so the income may not be entirely passive for a long time. It may also require a lot of time and money to set up a passive income stream.

So passive income is not easy, free, quick money. It takes actual work to build a sustainable passive income stream. These are important things to keep in mind if you want to start making passive income. Definitely check out our Disclaimers in the description below and on our website for more information.
