$2,000/Month Passive Income Charging Scooters [Beginner Guide]

Charging scooters is an excellent way to make passive income. Believe it or not, in very little time you can make yourself a nice wad of extra cash by charging electric scooters. These new-age, eco-friendly transportation methods are popping up all over the place, notably in major cities across the US and Europe, and are offering new passive income streams for those willing to give it a try.

But, can you really make a passive income charging scooters? You can make passive income from charging scooters, and hundreds of people are doing it. Scooters are very popular and need to be charged every single day. Companies that provide these scooters (like Lime and Bird), pay anyone who is authorised to charge these devices for each scooter they recharge.

Charging scooters is one of the most passive ways to make quick income because all you have to do is pick up scooters at night, charge them in your own home, and then put them back out for public use in the morning. Sounds easy, right? It is, and here is the best part – it’s pretty passive. This beginner guide covers how to make passive income charging scooters.

How to Make Passive Income Charging Scooters [Beginner Guide]

How Much Do Scooter Chargers Make? Scooter companies such as Lime and Bird payout between $3 for easy access scooters, and $20 for hard to find scooters. On average, the payout per scooter is about $5, and those charging 10 scooters per night make between $50 to $100 each night.

With charging costs as low as 5 cents per scooter, profit margins remain high. How much money you make depends on the number of scooters you can charge per day and the location you pick them up from (remote or down-town). This YouTuber explains that he made $2,300 charging Bird and Lime scooters in only 13 days.

1. Find Your Favourite (Local) Scooter Companies

If you are located in the USA or Europe, you probably can be a scooter charger. Electric scooter companies are popping up in a number of the largest cities around the globe. Here is a list of scooter companies for which you can become a scooter charger and make passive income:

Scooter Company

Austria, Belgium, France, Israel, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Uruguay

USA, Spain, Chilie

2. Sign Up to Become a Scooter Charger

The sign-up process is very simple and free. During the sign-up process, you will have to provide your address so that they can deliver the cables, and your financial details (like PayPal info) so the company can make payments to you. After signing up, you may get a call from the company asking you for more information like why you would like to work with them and so on. They may also provide a brief orientation on the process of charging scooters as per their requirements, and what to do when you find damaged scooters.

The screening process is an important step for scooter companies to ensure you understand what the job entails, and to make sure you are suited and ready for the challenge. Not that charging anything, including scooters, is rocket science 😉 The screening process may not be required in all companies. Once you pass the signup process, the charging cables will be sent to your home. At that moment you will be ready to get started picking up the scooters and charging them.

3. Ace The Scooter Training Program

Once you register as a scooter charger, your app will have a new, dedicated area with charging information. While in this mode, you will be able to access a map that will show you scooters in your area that need charging. The scooters pay different amounts depending on the amount of charging they need and how remotely they are located compared to the city center. Obviously, the less battery and the further the scooter is from downtown, the more you will get to charge it.

The two main players in this space, Lime and Bird, will give you very different experiences as far as finding scooters to charge. For Lime, you can find scooters in need of charging throughout the day. For Bird, available scooters start to emerge on the map after 9 pm.

4. Locate Profitable Scooters In Your Area

Once you have gone through all these steps, you will be a scooter charger! The process starts with you going into charger mode on your app so you can find where there are scooters that need to be charged. You can then go pickup the scooters and start charging them at home.

This step involves picking up the scooters from where they are located and bringing them home with you so that you can charge them. You can find scooters available for pickup using the app. Once you physically locate the scooter, scan it with the app so that it unlocks. You can ride the scooter or put it in your car or truck to take it home. In case the battery is completely dead, you could always manually kick it along (but it’s definitely less fun). Some people pick up large batches of scooters with large pickup trucks to maximize profit.

5. Keep Scooter Charging Costs Low

The charging process takes about 4 to 5 hours from empty to 100%. The chargers use a standard power outlet. But you don’t have to charge them at your home, you can take them to your office if that’s more convenient for you.
Charging scooters does not cost much, and you should hardly notice any change in your power bills after taking on the task of charging a few scooters. Charging a scooter costs anywhere from free (if you are using personal solar power) to more or less $0.25 cents per scooter depending on the cost of energy in your area. In any case, the more scooters you charge, the more money you will make.

6. Drop the Scooters off in Designated Areas

After you are done charging the scooters, you should drop them off in safe and convenient places. Bird scooters request they be released in “Bird Nests.” Lime scooters should be dropped off in “LimeHubs.” These are designated areas for these scooters to be found for clients in the morning.

To release the scooters, you should first reserve a spot and then take the scooter there. Through some simple guidelines on your app, you can simply drop the scooters off, and your job will be done. Usually, it is requested the scooters be dropped off early, preferably before 7 am in order to get paid for the charging process. If you are late to release them, you get paid less, or nothing. Be sure to read and respect each companies terms and conditions to avoid surprises.

They might not be very strict with this rule, but for Bird, the scooters are locked up after the deadline and transporting them to the designated release area can be a chore. After 5 pm, Bird does not allow you to release any scooters. However, with Lime, you can drop the scooters off at any time of the day.

7. Boost Your Scooter Charging Passive Income!

You don’t need to take time off your daily schedule in order to make money charging scooters. Since you should release the scooters before 7 am, chances are that you will be doing so while heading to work. Additionally, you can round them up as you head home from work. You can very easily make an average of $50 a day picking up 4 to 5 scooters. That is not too bad considering that it does not take much effort once you understand the ins and outs of the process.

There are a couple ways you can boost your passive income:

  • Charge more scooters with more chargers: You can order more from the companies but this may take some time to come in cutting down your income. Here are some very low cost ones you can order quickly on Amazon.
  • Optimize your pickup routes: This will become more of a habit the more scooters you pickup but optimize your routes to pickup a maximum amount of scooters in less time. Otherwise you will waste time picking them up all over town.
  • Don’t waste time searching for a specific scooter: Before you go out, decide on how much time you will spend looking for scooters. Some people drop them off in random places, and you may be able to see them on the map but not see them anywhere around yourself in real life! Don’t waste too much time looking for them.
  • Make sure to follow the rules and regulations for each company you sign up to, otherwise you may lose your earnings (ex. Returning Lime scooters before 7am).
  • Work in teams: Work with friends or relatives to maximize profits. If someone is willing to try this with you than go for it. Not only the more the merrier, but also the quicker you can be and the more scooters you can pickup.

How Passive is Charging Scooters?

Charging scooters is semi-passive because you do physically need to go and pick up the scooters and bring them back in the morning. However, you do not need to be there while they charge for 6 hours. If picking up and dropping off scooters on your way home from work or school can already be part of your routine, then this is very passive.

As far as scalability goes, your options will be a little limited. You can only charge so many scooters at a time. Besides, with more people getting into the scooter charging business, you might find it a little challenging to find scooters to charge when several other people are also looking for them.

Charging scooters for money is very easy. You do not need any specific training or qualifications. There is nothing special about the way you charge these devices. All you have to do is ensure that you deliver the scooters in a timely manner at the right hubs and you will get paid for your services. As long as you are punctual with the release of the scooters, then you should have a very easy time making money charging scooters.

Startup Costs

No startup costs are necessary to get into the scooter charging business. Signing up on major scooter company’s websites does not require you to pay anything at all. Besides, the cost of charging a scooter is pretty negligible. It’s very unlikely that you will notice any serious spike in your power bills because charging a scooter costs between 5 and 25 cents. It can even be free if you can charge them on solar power. You can invest in more chargers and a solar panel to maximize profits, but this isn’t mandatory to get started.

There are few risks associated with charging scooters for a couple of reasons. First of all, you do not have to pay anything or buy anything to start charging these devices. The companies will even provide chargers. All you have to do is pick up the scooters, charge them, and then release them to the designated areas and you are done. Other people may get to the scooters before you which has caused fights in the past. Scooter companies are working on improving their policies and reservation practices to avoid these situations. Be courteous and professional with other chargers to avoid problems.

Main scooter companies ensure that you have the charging cables within a couple of days. Once they arrive, you can use the app to find scooters and then charge them before releasing them again. So, within a week, you can start making money.

This will mostly depend on where you live. Obviously, in places where snow is usually an issue, the business might get a little seasonal. But that should not be too much of a concern if you live in places where the weather is generally good throughout the year, as there will always be tourists and hip young professionals willing to take a ride on scooters.

ROI (Return On Investment)

The return on your investment on charging scooters is amazing. First of all, signing up for the process is completely free. Secondly, it only costs 5 to 25 cents to fully charge a scooter. Considering that you will get at least $3 to charge the scooter, that is pretty good return on investment. You do not have to be physically present during the charging process making the job fairly passive.
